CAFOD – the Catholic Agency for overseas development – is the official aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. It was founded in 1960 and concentrates on working within and with local communities forming partnerships with relevant groups in deprived and poverty stricken areas of the world. This enables these communities to develop ways of progressing out of the poverty cycle. These days that involves developing ways of adapting to climate change. The aim of CAFOD’s work is primarily long-term development rather than simply responding rapidly to disasters though they are part of the UK’s disaster and emergency committee.
The Holy Trinity CAFOD group was set up 30 years ago, during Fr Paddy’s time with us, and for the first 18 years Stella Lewis chaired the group. She handed over to Rose Cain who was at the helm for 9 years and was very committed. We are immensely grateful to Stella and to Rose whose death we still mourn.
There are now 10 of us in the group ( not all of whom can be active) and we have focussed on running three fundraising events a year – A Quiz, A Harvest Supper and a winter Concert. At these we highlight a particular campaign or disaster area that the national CAFOD team are engaged in. We meet twice a year with the other CAFOD parish groups in the Dorset deanery together with the diocesan organiser who works closely with Caritas.
We also organise the Lent and Harvest fast days.
We would like to broaden the scope of the group and not limit ourselves to purely fundraising events; however, these are fun for the parish and successful in supporting CAFOD’s work – we will endeavour to continue with them.
There is more to CAFOD’s work than money and we would like to engage with its wider mission. We welcome anyone who is interested in spreading peace and justice through CAFOD’s work. Contact Frances Hogwood ( f.hogwood978@btinternet.com or 01305 259576) or any other member of the group.
