Brief History of Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester

Holy Trinity became the Parish Church for local Catholics in 1976 and there have been five Parish Priests since that time, together with some short-term temporary appointments. The present incumbent, as Priest-in-Charge, is Father Babu Francis CM. Within our multi ethnic Parish there is St Mary’s School for 5- to 9-year-olds and a range of groups that meet to enhance the spiritual and social life of the community. There are many opportunities to offer your help and support as a volunteer. Everyone is welcome.

More detailed information about the history of the Church can be found below. Information about various groups can be found under Our Church – Parish Groups. There is also a pamphlet available at the back of the church: ‘Bridging the Centuries – The Story of Holy Trinity Church, Dorchester, Dorset’ by James Pellow.

The Roman Catholic parish of Dorchester is delighted to be chosen as one of the five Pilgrimage centres in the Diocese of Plymouth for the Jubilee Year of 2025. We gather for collective worship at Holy Trinity Church located in the High Street of the county town of Dorset. The current building was completed in 1876, although Christian worship has been offered on the site since the 11th century. The interior features of the building include at the east end a reredos installed in 1897 of carved and guilded woodwork, carved at Oberammergau, depicting the crucifixion, the appearance of Christ to Mary Magdalene and the appearance of the risen Lord at Emmaus, with figures of saints on either side of it. There are also stained-glass windows by Kempe on the south side.
